Smaller academic journals are important but often overlooked. For a first draft post, I figured it might be useful to create a simple list of smaller academic journals that regularly publish archaeological research about the Northwest Coast (by small, I mean not many articles and issues per year). If you have suggestions or reminders to add here, please email me.
Small Journals that regularly feature Northwest Coast Archaeology
Canadian Journal of Archaeology
BC Studies: The British Columbian Quarterly
Arctic Anthropology is a long established journal focused on the global northern latitudes which includes substantial regional coverage on the Northwest Coast
Journal of Northwest Anthropology (formerly NW Anthropological Research Notes). Curiously, this journal does not make its table of contents public or accessible for the current year but does post their back issues online for free at https://www.northwestanthropology.com/digital-archive
The Midden: Journal of the Archaeological Society of British Columbia *is now peer reviewed with an editorial board * but are thinking of changing the name of the journal which is too bad and a bit reactionary imo:(
Alaska Journal of Anthropology
Pacific Northwest Quarterly also on JSTOR
Oregon Historical Quarterly (OHQ)
Other emerging journal venues
PlatForum: UVic Journal of Graduate Students in Anthropology occasionally publishes on archaeological topics https://journals.uvic.ca/index.php/platforum/index
No-longer/not very active journals
Archaeology in Washington while a long established venue, this Washington focused journal seems on hiatus currently, with its last issue in 2019
Inlet: Contributions to Archaeology was a promising venue but hasn’t gone beyond their first issue in 2018
Syesis (formerly published by the Royal BC Museum)
Northwest Anthropological Research Notes (now Journal of NW Anthropology).
