About The HECA Lab

The Historical Ecology and Coastal Archaeology (HECA) Lab is a group of students and collaborators working with Dr. Iain McKechnie and coastal First Nations on zooarchaeological and coastal archaeological research relating to contemporary conservation and environmental management. We consider how hundreds of human generations of Indigenous settlement have contributed to coastal environments in British Columbia. Please explore this site, click on the links, and tabs to learn more.

The lab is looking for future graduate students and post doctoral scholars (e.g., Fall 2026) so, please be in touch by email. It helps if you also share a resume or CV, a writing sample, and how your interests align with the lab and its partners. Check out the lab publications as well as the theses and dissertations for examples.
