Counting Northwest Coast Archaeology Journals

Regional Journals in NWC Archaeology

Smaller academic journals (i.e., those with only a few issues & articles per year) are vitally important but can be overlooked relative to international high ‘impact’ venues. As a result, many up and coming graduate students might not even know these venues exist). Below is a tentative list of journals that publish archaeological research on the Northwest Coast. If you have additional suggestions or reminders to add, please get in touch.

Active Journal venues

Alaska Journal of Anthropology
Arctic Anthropology
Archaeology in Washington
BC Studies The British Columbian Quarterly
Canadian Journal of Archaeology
Journal of Northwest Anthropology (formerly NW Anthropological Research Notes)
Northwest Science

No-longer active journals

Sadly, not all journals are consistently supported and some have not been able to persist. However, they still have quite valuable contributions. Tracking down specific papers can be challenging (but ask Librarians – they like requests;) and fortunately archives for some of these journals have been digitized by various institutions. There are rumours of revivals for PlatForum and The Midden so this may change in the future.

Canadian Zooarchaeology
The Midden: Journal of the Archaeological Society of British Columbia
PlatForum: UVic Journal of Graduate Students in Anthropology
Syesis (a journal formerly published by the Royal BC Museum)
